The New Millennial Gay Experience

Being gay in our emerging new world

Gay Conversion In Canada

Posted on October 12, 2013 at 5:35 PM

Our reader Hue-Man would like to refer us to a two-part story in the Toronto Star about gay conversion in Canada. The conversion “industry” has been dramatically waning in the United States, “on its last legs,” as the Toronto Star story puts it. The end of Exodus International in July and a heartfelt apology from its president was a dramatically important story that didn’t get the attention it deservesd. But the “Living Waters” program is still going strong across Canada.

A Star reporter went undercover with the group, and produced a fine report. It is matter-of-fact in tone and lacking in stridency, which I think makes it more effective. It points out that the program addresses many issues beyond homosexuality. The people who run the program do not come across as “evil,” but rather as people who genuinely feel everyone is born heterosexual, and that childhood traumas that cause homosexuality can be identified and “fixed.” The irony, of course, is that their not “being” evil does not prevent the program from “doing” evil, an evil that can damage lives.

The best ray of hope from the story is this statement from the organization on September 30: “With ongoing research we have grown in our awareness that it is highly unusual for an individual to shift from being same sex attracted to being exclusively heterosexually attracted and we discuss with our leaders and volunteers the importance of not promising this unusual kind of ‘change.’”
