Movie Recommendation - "Weekend"

“Weekend” is a beautiful film that tells of an encounter between two gay men that changes their lives in the course of two days before one of them has to leave the country. It stars the brilliant Tom Cullen, recently appearing in the fourth season of “Downton Abbey,” as Russell, a gay man who has lots of straight friends and isn’t comfortable with being “out” in the open. After a house party he goes to a gay club and meets Glen (played by Chris New). They end up at Russell’s apartment. Glen likes to record people talking about their experiences and Russell writes about Glen on his laptop, a kind of journal of all the men he’s been with.

In a relationship that lasts just two days the story shows immense character growth. Glen needs to decide if he wants to go to America or stay in England with Russell, who believes they can have a good relationship. Both characters help each other deal with their issues. By the end, Glen understands what it means to love someone, and Russell overcomes his fear of being out in public when Glen kisses him goodbye at the train station. Glen also gives him a present that has the voice recording of what Russell said about their first encounter.

“Weekend” is an amazing little film. You can actually feel the bond between the two characters and understand where they both come from when they are having conversations with each other or fighting. It’s sensitive and heartfelt, and will resonate with a lot of people.

Really loved this movie - have watched it twice. Second time was even better...loads of subtlety, gentle, realistic emotions...perfectly acted.
