The New Millennial Gay Experience

As readers of this site are aware, we support and extol new ways of experiencing the gay lifestyle, ways that were impossible until very recently. However, we combine those feelings with the opinion that gay people - especially young people - should know and understand our history.
In that context I strongly recommend two documentaries. "Before Stonewall," issued in 1984, describes the gay experience in the United States from the 1920s until the transformative Stonewall riots in 1969. We all need to know what life was like for gay people in an entirely different era. The documentary won multiple awards. In 1999 a companion piece, "After Stonewall," was issued. That documentary covered gay American history from 1970 through the end of the century, which was just before our new era began.
Anyone who watches these two documentaries will come away with a fairly comprehensive understanding of the gay experience over the past century, and of how phenomenal the changes have been. Young people will have a foundational knowledge, and older viewers will likely learn new things as well. If any of our international readers are aware of any similar historical documentaries (or books) that spotlight another part of the world please share in the comments.
