Liberace's Lover To Spend 8 - 20 Years In Prison

Posted on January 26, 2014 at 12:40 AM

Scott Thorson, Liberace’s lover – played by Matt Damon in “Behind The Candelabra” - was sentenced this week to 8 – 20 years in prison. He had been on probation for burglary and identity theft convictions, and then failed a succession of drug tests. He most recently tested positive for meth on November 19, and that was the last straw for the judge, who had earlier given Thorson the “second chance” for which he had pleaded after three earlier failed tests.

Thorson has had an….ahem….”interesting” life. Beginning an affair at the age of 16 or 18 (Thorson has told conflicting stories) with one of the world’s most prominent entertains would be enough for one lifetime, but that was just the beginning. He became part of Liberace’s act, had plastic surgery to look more like him, and then sued him for $113 million in 1982 when gay affairs were truly scandalous.

Thorson settled the suit with Liberace, reconciled with him shortly before his death in 1987, and then wrote “Behind The Candelabra.” In 1989 he was a major witness in the murder prosecution of a gangster, and subsequently went into the witness protection program. In 1990 he was shot five times by drug dealers. In 2008 he was sent to prison for the first time for drug and burglary charges. He was diagnosed with hepatitis C, and later with stage 2 cancer. In 2013 he found or stole someone’s wallet and used the credit cards to rent hotels and make purchases. That led to a five year probation.

He also claimed to have had a six or seven year affair with Michael Jackson, to whom he was introduced by Liberace. “He treated me well,” he said of Jackson.

Thorson plans to write another book. He’ll have time to do so in prison, and he obviously has enough to write about.
