Shameless Highlights: "There's the Rub"

So, a lot happened in this episode, and that’s why I enjoyed it. Some of the storylines came to a conclusion and new ones emerged. To top it all off, Ian showed up!

Frank, Samantha, and Carl

Frank is still bonding with his eldest daughter. I can’t see Frank as a father figure. I just can’t! It’s weird to see how well he gets along with his daughter and grandson. Their storyline focused on building a sweat lodge in order to cure Frank’s liver. The important thing was Carl finally seeing the truth about Frank and leaving him. I hope that continues. I don’t want Carl to get hurt. He needs to stick with the family members that really care about him. Frank loses consciousness inside the sweat lodge and is oblivious to what the rest of the family experiences in the episode.

Fiona’s fall comes to an end?

The whole “cheating on her boyfriend with his brother” thing came to an end…finally! The good news is that Fiona was able to keep her job. The bad news…let me take a deep breath…she rejects the brother, keeps his cocaine, celebrates her birthday with Kev and Vee, does drugs, rushes to the hospital when Liam gets into the cocaine, and gets arrested, leaving the kids without adult supervision!

I don’t like Fiona this season. Here’s to hoping the whole ordeal serves as a wakeup call and she gets her life on track. And I hope nothing serious happens to Liam.

Mickey and Ian:  Is a reunion coming?

Lip, Mickey, and Ian!

Lip gets another visit from the military at his college because of Ian’s identity theft. Ian is also wanted for trying to steal a helicopter (Cool!) and being absent without leave. Lip is worried about his brother and sets out to find him. He shares a touching moment with Mickey. It’s very clear that Mickey misses Ian and I can’t wait to see them interact on screen. Lip and Debbie check out Jimmy/Steve’s dad’s apartment and they find out Ian crashed there for a few days and then headed to where their mother lives. Once there they get to know he’s working at a gay bar. Okay, I was not expecting Ian being high on drugs and handling the bar. I really want to know what went wrong with Ian in the Army. He was so determined to set his life straight last season. Even if the fake I.D thing got him caught, what happened that made him act this way?

I have read previews of the next episodes and it seems Ian will be crashing at Mickey’s place for a while, and they will be spending time together. Maybe this time Mickey will be the one who helps Ian come to terms with whatever he is experiencing? Lip seems to be the only sane one right now. I just hope he doesn’t have to leave college to take care of the kids and Ian. Fiona had better get hold of the situation, and fast. There’s a lot of uncertainty regarding what might happen to the Gallaghers.

I'm not as optimistic about Frank and his newly-found daughter. Frank is a user and I expect him to act as he did with Sheila.

I wonder how much of Fiona's recklessness is the result of Steve/Jimmy's disappearance; he was an integral part of the family on a regular basis and provided support to Fiona that is now missing. The result is unpleasant to watch.

Ian's return is welcome although his behavior is out of character - shutting out his family while contacting his old lover (HH) and his step-mother was unexpected.

Agree with you about Frank. I remember that show creators saying something about Jimmy/Steve coming back for an episode or two. So, maybe some closure will help Fiona get her mind straight. I just want her to be normal again. She wasn't perfect but I admired her for doing what she could to help look after her family.

I am happy that Ian came back. I wasn't even expecting to see him this season other than a cameo during the finale or something. Here's to hoping the US version doesn't send him away like the UK version. As for his actions, there should be an explanation soon enough...fingers crossed !!

Great review as usual, Farid! Mixed feelings about Ian's reappearance: I was really glad to see him, but pained of his life choices. Staying in a run-down home with crazy naked lady? Being high as a kite and almost oblivious of his siblings' visit? I don't understand why he didn't reach out to Lip in the first place, to help him with whatever the trouble was. Hopefully, we'll get satisfactory answers soon.

This is obviously Lip's season: he is the moral center of the family and has taken over as mother hen from increasingly irresponsible Fiona.

Also, I like the way Debbie and Carl are developing. When we first met them, they were more sketches than characters (especially Carl), now they're fully-fledged personalities.

I have no idea what's going on in Ian's head right now...what is wrong with that boy? Is he acting like this because of Mickey and he's madly in love with him? what is he expecting from Mickey and why ruin his own life in the process? i want a scene where they both interact and speak or even fight things out. Can't handle Ian wasting himself away.

Lip has a lot of responsibility on his shoulders right now. Have a feeling Lip and Fiona have a fight with each other coming soon...don't want him to leave college.

Debbie and Carl and growing up as more fleshed out characters. Now that Debbie isn't focused on just sex, she can play a role in keeping the house running with Sheila and Ian until Fiona comes to her senses.
